Beans Up Your Nose

Jared Spool wrote about the best piece of advice he has received on managing client expectations. This is something he calls the First Rule of Consulting:

No matter how much you try, you can’t stop people from sticking beans up their nose.

In both the web development and IT world, I have encountered a client’s desire to bring two things together that do not belong united. This is what Jared is referring to with the combining of “beans and noses.”

Beans and noses. We have beans. We have a nose. They must be united.

The fifteenth release of WordPress, named “Gershwin” or 3.2 came out today. The main purpose of this release was to improve the speed of WordPress, both internally from an administration side and externally to your website visitors. To help with the speed improvements, the minimum requirements for running WordPress on your website host have changed.

WordPress 3.2 requires:

Convert Flash .SWF Files to HTML with Swiffy

I found that Google Labs released Swiffy, a new tool for converting SWF files to HTML5 through a ReadWriteMobile post.

Swiffy converts Flash SWF files to HTML5, allowing you to reuse Flash content on devices without a Flash player (such as iPhones and iPads).Swiffy currently supports a subset of SWF 8 and ActionScript 2.0, and the output works in all Webkit browsers such as Chrome and Mobile Safari. If possible, exporting your Flash animation as a SWF 5 file might give better results.

Hopefully, restaurant webmasters will use this tool so I can view their address, phone number, or menu from my phone.

I tested the conversion capabilities

Email marketing, when done well, is a powerful sales tool. Capturing visitor email addresses on your website is a great way to start building your list. Social Currency

Last week I was researching potential solutions for a client, who wanted the ability to easy create and manage an image slideshow for various posts and pages from within WordPress. I came across a free plugin that seemed perfect, it did everything the client needed and had a simple interface. The slideshow plugin was free, and while nice, but not necessary.
I clicked the “Download” button that looked like this:
Download it
Then the button turned to this:
Pay with a Tweet

Instead of asking me to pay with money, the plugin requires downloaders

Moleskine Notebooks

This past week, I filled up my current “carry around” notebook. This lead to a very exciting time for this office supply junkie, choosing my next notebook. I first heard about Doane Paper from the Office Supply Geek, and have been wanting one (two or three) of their Idea Journals.

Yesterday, I went ahead and made a purchase from the Doane Paper online store. I was pleasantly surprised to receive this email about 10 minutes after my transaction

Facebook is Big and Boring

facebook_is_crowded

Facebook has hit the 600 million active user mark. It was once a website people signed up for after hearing one of their friends say:

“You will never believe this! I was on Facebook the other day and I saw ____!”

You had to be on Facebook so you didn’t feel left out and could stay up on the latest gossip .

A trend I have noticed among my friends is the decreasing number of status updates posted to Facebook. Just six months
